Mid Century Modern Living Room Update

Thank you so much for your sweet feedback on my living room interior design reno! It meant a lot!

I also talked with an interior designer at Havenly and had a great experience – AND it was very affordable! Here’s a course by them too, which was super helpful. I recommend working with them if you need any help with interior design, or any suggestions and recommendations. They really gave me some great ideas and helped me get the living room design I want.

Since I want a mid century modern living room design, I chose furniture pieces that would complement each other, and bring different elements of both mid century, and modern.

Here’s what we got:

Mid Century Modern Living Room Update

Traditional Rug

I wanted to stick with a white or light grey rug. We got the size 8’ by 10’.

A traditional rug is perfect for the mid century modern style! It brings a mid century vibe, while also being modern, since the style is very in right now.

It’s simple, yet very effective, since it perfectly ties the whole room together in such a nice way. The color was also great for me!

leather sofa

I know it’s a bit masculine… but I really wanted a leather sofa! Even though there were a number of cheaper options, I thought it was a good investment. We LOVE this sofa. It’s gorgeous and comfy, and so far seems to be of great quality.

It’s definitely the focal point of the living room, so investing in a quality sofa that you love is always worth it. I think it’s perfect for the mid century modern design, since the style is a classic for this type of sofa.

The Italian leather looks gorgeous, and it takes the whole room to a new level.

Plus, it’s one of the most important furniture pieces for a living room, so I chose extra carefully!

Faux Plants

Do you prefer real or faux plants? In an ideal world I would choose real, but I don’t have the greenest thumb. Faux is my way to go! Here are the ones we have – I love them, they look really real.

Overall, real plants bring a fresh, natural tone to the room, and I usually prefer them. But, if you’re like me, you don’t have time to water them (or you just know you’ll forget), the faux plants will still bring a little green in the room, without needing any additional work every week.

So, if you can take care of real plants, go with them, but if not, the faux ones are a good substitute.

White Accent chair

This is coming at the end of the week, but I’m so happy with the sofa and bar stools, I’m pretty confident this chair will also be great.

I love how it stands out next to the more traditional sofa and rug, and it looks so chic.

This gorgeous lounge chair definitely brings the modern vibe to the mid century modern style, the color goes great with everything, and it has clean lines, which gives me the simplicity I want.

TV Stand/ Media Console

I got this piece of furniture first – when we were still in SF! It’s an investment, but I absolutely love it. P.S. I did try to find a cheaper similar one but was unsuccessful.

I love how well it goes with the white accent chair! They look like they were made to complement each other. The clean lines, the modern style, the color – this TV stand fits in perfectly and ties the whole living room together!

Another thing that I’ll do is decorate the TV stand with some nice home decor. Books, candles, decor pieces, maybe even a vase with flowers in it – TV stands are amazing for not only storing stuff in them, but for making the place look gorgeous with some nice decor.

Bar Stools

I absolutely love these bar stools that go along with our leather sofa vibe. We got the set of 3. They are modern, give a fresh look to the room, and they go so well with the rest of the room.

The color goes well with the entire room, since they stand out, but not too much. They give the
room a bit of an edge, since it’s always great to break up the cohesive colors and bring in a bit of a contrast. It makes the place look more interesting.

So, since we have a great island, we added 3 bar stools to it, and now we not only have extra sitting space, but we also elevated the room.

coffee Table

As I mentioned, I worked with Havenly to redecorate the living room, and they recommended this coffee table. It’s BIG and heavy, so only good for larger spaces, and you need 2 people to put it together. Havenly also recommended this side table and a brass lamp, similar to this one. I haven’t purchased them yet, but I might.

Coffee tables are so important for any living room design, since besides the sofa, they’re the focal points of the living room.

So, having coffee tables that go perfectly with the mid century modern living room style is very important for achieving the wanted look. Another important thing is styling them, and I can’t wait to get to that part!

Old TV Bar

The one we have Zak actually found on the street in NYC. But here is a kind-of similar table.

The light color goes well with the chair, the TV stand, and the rug, and the wooden brown tones go so well with the sofa, and bring a bit of an earthiness to the room. The clean lines also look great.

Full length Mirror

The one we have is actually from Ikea, here it is, but Havenly recommended an oval-top gold one. Here’s a similar (cheaper haha) one I may get in the future.

Full length mirrors open up the space, they visually make it a lot bigger, and they make the room feel more spacious than it actually is. Plus, they always come in handy to check how you look!

Ikea always has a good selection of mirrors, in all shapes and sizes, so whether you need a rectangle one, or an oval one, definitely check there. But of course, Amazon has an amazing selection as well (just as for everything else), so make sure you search on there as well if you’re looking for a good mirror.

LAMPS

I already mentioned that Havenly recommended this brass table lamp, and I plan on getting it soon. I also plan on getting a floor lamp in a similar style. I think the brass style really goes well with the living room mid century modern style, and those details really bring the whole room together.

Lamps are such a great way to decorate your home, and to play with light as well. Whether you get a small one, like a table lamp, or a bigger, floor lamp, they will really help bring your whole place together.
